Bowl of Broken Hearts

The urge to bake suddenly overtakes
I run to the stove with my apron on
muffins are what I decide I will bake
I think that today I will have some fun

Not blueberries, but strawberries today
I throw in some cocoa to mix things up
I put it all in and I stir away
I even use cute little heart-shaped cups

I notice the batter is getting thick
I think I may need to bake these some more
an hour later I stick in my toothpick
Still completely uncooked to my horror!

I dump out the muffins; they fall apart
and stare down at the bowl of broken hearts...

Ode to Odonata on my Antenna

I stared out the window at the downpour
I ran out the door, my bags in my hand
across the lot and away from the store
sprinting across the watery wasteland

On top of my car sat a dragonfly
on the antenna he perched, looking down
taking a break from wandering the skies
a fierce predator, contained to the ground

I sat and I stared at him for a while;
forgot in the moment the pouring rain
I focused on now and started to smile
my soul felt inspired to write again

Just like that the dragonfly flew away
for none of us can sit and rest all day

Sunflowers

I drive past and see that the field is plowed
right now just the dirt adorns the flat ground
in this place the sunflower seeds are sowed
and soon the green stalks will begin to crown

In the blink of an eye a forest grows
a great vibrant sea of yellow and green
folks stop to visit this peaceful meadow
a place both so lively, and yet— serene

I pass once more and the flowers are brown
they’ve withered, yet cling to life desperately
their faces have shriveled and fallen down
and now they sow seeds as their legacy

At first when I looked I saw pain and strife,
but looking much closer, I see new life

TGIF

This week was the first back from Winter break
and now it is done as Friday is here
it has almost been more than I can take
but next week the slate will start again clear

Monday was just a short teacher work day
and Tuesday was the students' first day back
we started things off in just the right way
I know that they won't give me any flack.

Wednesday and Thursday dragged so slowly on
and now finally Friday has arrived
now that the long day to a close has drawn
I certainly feel that I am alive

The weekend is here; I'm ready to rest
I love the week, but the weekend is best!

Frigid

I awaken to a chill in the air
My sheets may be warm but my room is cold
and I must get up though my legs are bare
why can't the outdoors by climate controlled?

I choose an outfit I think will be warm
and bundle up with a scarf, gloves, and coat
I open the door out into the storm
facing the wind like a brave mountain goat

I start my car and I turn on the heat
It gets toasty as I drive down the road
getting back out in the cold's quite a feat
but I am at work; it's time to unload

It's shaping up to be a frigid day
I'm chilled to the bone; it won't go away.

Flannel

These Winter nights can be so bitter cold
tonight the low is below ten degrees
I don't need silver and I don't need gold
all I want tonight is my flannel sheets

I pull these warm cotton things on my bed
and I know that I am in for a treat
flannel pillowcases under my head
and warm flannel that surrounds all my feet

In my flannel sheets the world is all good
I know everything will be alright
I wish I had a flannel neighborhood
so I could leave home without the frostbite

I get snuggled in and bundled up tight
and I am in for a warm Winter's night

Spider

With eight tiny legs you walk slowly by
Beady eyes staring out into the world
Perhaps it is prey that has caught your eye?
As you now your menacing mass unfurl

You're spinning the web that you call your home
an intricate structure of finest silk
catching the insects that into may roam
surviving off of them like mother's milk

You stalk your next meal and sneak up behind
you sink in your fangs they are razor sharp
your prey falls over with a pain so blind
you slowly remove your venomous barbs

You are the spider; the hunter of all
to your great bite will the mightiest fall.

Writer's Block

It's only the fifth day of the New Year
yet I find myself with some writer's block
I have a head that just cannot be cleared
my muse has frozen like a broken clock

I need to find topics to write about
Oh! To find a source of inspiration!
But yet, my mind is only filled with doubt,
this may require some perspiration...

Should I keep a journal with all my thoughts?
And write down all that I see in each day?
Surely the ideas would be a lot
and I could remember them all that way

I don't know what I'll do but one thing's clear
something must be done for this sonnet year!

End of an Era

At last all good things must come to an end
and this is where I find myself tonight
Alas! My winter break does not extend
The re-start of work is within my sights

Tomorrow at 5 am will I wake
(Though I admit I'll probably hit snooze)
hopefully it won't be too much to take
and I won't be struck with the morning blues

Luckily it's just a teacher work day
a chance to get back in the swing of things
Practice before jumping into the fray
for who knows what the semester will bring?

I surely am ready to take this leap,
but I think I really should get some sleep

Middle Ground

In between the light and the dark there lies
a middle ground built of pure perfection
a zone of unwaivering compromise
which is clearly the proper selection

It lies in the middle with splendid heat
and always promises a perfect roast
you just press down this button so elite
and soon you will have the medium toast

For if you press light your toast is just warm
and if you press dark your toast will be burnt
but you will not need hear the smoke alarm
when the toaster to medium is turnt

Just spread butter on, and bite with a crunch
this medium toast completes perfect brunch!

Productivity

At nine AM my alarm clock goes off
I promptly hit snooze and sleep in 'til ten
I sit up and clear my throat with a cough
and now it's time to get to work again!

But maybe first I'll watch a TV show
A quick little break won't hurt anything...
Wait... it's twelve o'clock? Where did the time go?
My attention just seems to be slipping

But what if I watch one more episode?
for this series is just so enticing!
I must know what happens or I'll explode!
You say it's 4:30? That's surprising...

My productivity has slipped away
I have gotten not a thing done today!

Round 2

As midnight draws close we count down to one
The excitement builds; the time's almost here
another long year is finally done
Five, four, three, two, one, and Happy New Year!

Champagne corks fly off and we raise a glass
and to all around we sing well wishes
and knowing that soon the moment will pass
some lovers and strangers exchange kisses

And so once again, I take up this task
to write a sonnet each day is my plan
your patience with me is all that I ask
and I'll try to do the best that I can.

Thank you for reading; I'm glad you are here!
I'll try to make this a great sonnet year.

Looking Back

Once sonnets flowed freely from mind to page
yet now rarely have time to leave my lips
and as I now look back with somber visage
and pondering how it has come to this.

I see the ruins of abandoned blog
no posts have been written for months on end
Yet still! Visits in the visitor log!
Perhaps this is something that I can mend

Myself is the only one I can blame
I have left alone the thing that I love
Without sonneting life is not the same
So much emotion, and nowhere to shove!

I hope to restart upon the new year
I am excited! It is almost here!

A Dud in the Mouth

At the movie theater there is one treat
That I must confess I cannot resist
Movies are well paired with something to eat
And why not eat the best thing that exists

Milk Duds are the object of my desire
I find that I must always buy a box
Though they may cost a small bit to acquire
The candy is worth it... It really rocks!

Those small chewy nuggets of caramel
Each one coated with such sweet chocolate
Open the box... What a heavenly smell
A dud in the mouth is sure to elate!

I pop one in to chew and then savor
Oh what a wonderful burst of flavor

Putting a Sonnet on it

A sonnet is what puts my mind at ease
even amidst all the day's craziness
I've found may other things often please,
but sonnets always bring me happiness

To think one's thoughts is but one simple thing,
to hear them spoken is quite another,
but to hear your thoughts through a sonnet sing
brings on a joy that is like no other

No matter what emotion I may face
to make poetry gives it a beauty
it's a reminder not to be erased
a portrait of my heart painted truly

To see that this art form loans such a smile
makes me think "perhaps I'll do this a while"

Agony by Proxy

He came outside with his arm in a sling
and gave a small wince with each step he took
too look at his face was to feel the sting
that he clearly showed with each painful look

He removed his shirt to apply some heat
and I saw his arm all swollen and bruised
I saw in his face, he was almost beat
by his own body so greatly abused

It gave me such pain to see him this way
the man that I love in great agony
would that I could take it on for a day
to give him the peace to rest and be freed

It's true "grief is the price we pay for love"
but why must this happen to my loved one?

The Ten Stages of Netflix Addiction

First stage: decide which show I want to watch
there are so many shows to choose from!
I scroll and scroll and yet I find no match
Stage two: I finally settle on one

Stage three: watch an episode... and it's dumb!
then stage four: go back to look once again
I just hope I'll find something that is fun...
repeat stages one through four with no end

Stage five: finally find something that's good
Stage six: "I'll just watch one more episode"
Stage seven: binge watch far more than you should
Stage eight: at last reach the end of the road

Stage nine: realize that your show is all done
Stage ten: ... it's time to go back to stage one

The Indian Food Dilemma

I enter the Indian Restaurant
and I'm hit by the smells of the buffet
the warnings from last time which should still haunt
have with these tasty smells faded away

I don't really know just what I'm getting
but it all just looks so very tasty
but within a few minutes I'm sweating
it would seem that I have been too hasty

My tongue starts to burn but it tastes so good
I take a break for a swig of my drink
I took it, so now I'll finish this food
I know I can do it... at least I think

I finish my meal; I am satisfied
and I'm proud to say that I did not cry.

Shakespeare Sunday: Sonnet Twelve

I think about time which does age all things,
as the dark night does overtake the day,
hear the old songbird, too feeble to sing
a withered up fruit, all moldy and gray.

Melted ice cream on a hot afternoon
a car in a yard, all covered with rust
fallen down, shriveled up, day old balloons
a neglected shelf, enveloped with dust

What is it to your good looks time will do?
will they fade away just to be erased
for of beauty such as yours there is few
and you must ensure that yours is replaced

Nothing can stop time from taking your life
but in leaving kin, his gain is denied

Original:
When I do count the clock that tells the time,
And see the brave day sunk in hideous night;
When I behold the violet past prime,
And sable curls all silver'd o'er with white;
When lofty trees I see barren of leaves
Which erst from heat did canopy the herd,
And summer's green all girded up in sheaves
Borne on the bier with white and bristly beard,
Then of thy beauty do I question make,
That thou among the wastes of time must go,
Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake
And die as fast as they see others grow;
And nothing 'gainst Time's scythe can make defence
Save breed, to brave him when he takes thee hence.

Inconsistent

English is an inconsistent language
I find myself inconsistent as well
for a whole year I wrote without anguish
so soon into this one it's gone to hell

I thought perhaps I would feel some relief
without the deadline of midnight each night
but then when I think all I feel is grief
and I know that something is just not right

While sometimes to finish it was a strain
I just miss having such a great outlet
a place to write about laughter and pain
It so helped to be able to name it

Perhaps I needed a break, not the end
and it's time for me to begin again
