TGIF

This week was the first back from Winter break
and now it is done as Friday is here
it has almost been more than I can take
but next week the slate will start again clear

Monday was just a short teacher work day
and Tuesday was the students' first day back
we started things off in just the right way
I know that they won't give me any flack.

Wednesday and Thursday dragged so slowly on
and now finally Friday has arrived
now that the long day to a close has drawn
I certainly feel that I am alive

The weekend is here; I'm ready to rest
I love the week, but the weekend is best!

Frigid

I awaken to a chill in the air
My sheets may be warm but my room is cold
and I must get up though my legs are bare
why can't the outdoors by climate controlled?

I choose an outfit I think will be warm
and bundle up with a scarf, gloves, and coat
I open the door out into the storm
facing the wind like a brave mountain goat

I start my car and I turn on the heat
It gets toasty as I drive down the road
getting back out in the cold's quite a feat
but I am at work; it's time to unload

It's shaping up to be a frigid day
I'm chilled to the bone; it won't go away.

Flannel

These Winter nights can be so bitter cold
tonight the low is below ten degrees
I don't need silver and I don't need gold
all I want tonight is my flannel sheets

I pull these warm cotton things on my bed
and I know that I am in for a treat
flannel pillowcases under my head
and warm flannel that surrounds all my feet

In my flannel sheets the world is all good
I know everything will be alright
I wish I had a flannel neighborhood
so I could leave home without the frostbite

I get snuggled in and bundled up tight
and I am in for a warm Winter's night

Spider

With eight tiny legs you walk slowly by
Beady eyes staring out into the world
Perhaps it is prey that has caught your eye?
As you now your menacing mass unfurl

You're spinning the web that you call your home
an intricate structure of finest silk
catching the insects that into may roam
surviving off of them like mother's milk

You stalk your next meal and sneak up behind
you sink in your fangs they are razor sharp
your prey falls over with a pain so blind
you slowly remove your venomous barbs

You are the spider; the hunter of all
to your great bite will the mightiest fall.

Writer's Block

It's only the fifth day of the New Year
yet I find myself with some writer's block
I have a head that just cannot be cleared
my muse has frozen like a broken clock

I need to find topics to write about
Oh! To find a source of inspiration!
But yet, my mind is only filled with doubt,
this may require some perspiration...

Should I keep a journal with all my thoughts?
And write down all that I see in each day?
Surely the ideas would be a lot
and I could remember them all that way

I don't know what I'll do but one thing's clear
something must be done for this sonnet year!

End of an Era

At last all good things must come to an end
and this is where I find myself tonight
Alas! My winter break does not extend
The re-start of work is within my sights

Tomorrow at 5 am will I wake
(Though I admit I'll probably hit snooze)
hopefully it won't be too much to take
and I won't be struck with the morning blues

Luckily it's just a teacher work day
a chance to get back in the swing of things
Practice before jumping into the fray
for who knows what the semester will bring?

I surely am ready to take this leap,
but I think I really should get some sleep

Middle Ground

In between the light and the dark there lies
a middle ground built of pure perfection
a zone of unwaivering compromise
which is clearly the proper selection

It lies in the middle with splendid heat
and always promises a perfect roast
you just press down this button so elite
and soon you will have the medium toast

For if you press light your toast is just warm
and if you press dark your toast will be burnt
but you will not need hear the smoke alarm
when the toaster to medium is turnt

Just spread butter on, and bite with a crunch
this medium toast completes perfect brunch!

Productivity

At nine AM my alarm clock goes off
I promptly hit snooze and sleep in 'til ten
I sit up and clear my throat with a cough
and now it's time to get to work again!

But maybe first I'll watch a TV show
A quick little break won't hurt anything...
Wait... it's twelve o'clock? Where did the time go?
My attention just seems to be slipping

But what if I watch one more episode?
for this series is just so enticing!
I must know what happens or I'll explode!
You say it's 4:30? That's surprising...

My productivity has slipped away
I have gotten not a thing done today!

Round 2

As midnight draws close we count down to one
The excitement builds; the time's almost here
another long year is finally done
Five, four, three, two, one, and Happy New Year!

Champagne corks fly off and we raise a glass
and to all around we sing well wishes
and knowing that soon the moment will pass
some lovers and strangers exchange kisses

And so once again, I take up this task
to write a sonnet each day is my plan
your patience with me is all that I ask
and I'll try to do the best that I can.

Thank you for reading; I'm glad you are here!
I'll try to make this a great sonnet year.
