Bowl of Broken Hearts

The urge to bake suddenly overtakes
I run to the stove with my apron on
muffins are what I decide I will bake
I think that today I will have some fun

Not blueberries, but strawberries today
I throw in some cocoa to mix things up
I put it all in and I stir away
I even use cute little heart-shaped cups

I notice the batter is getting thick
I think I may need to bake these some more
an hour later I stick in my toothpick
Still completely uncooked to my horror!

I dump out the muffins; they fall apart
and stare down at the bowl of broken hearts...

Ode to Odonata on my Antenna

I stared out the window at the downpour
I ran out the door, my bags in my hand
across the lot and away from the store
sprinting across the watery wasteland

On top of my car sat a dragonfly
on the antenna he perched, looking down
taking a break from wandering the skies
a fierce predator, contained to the ground

I sat and I stared at him for a while;
forgot in the moment the pouring rain
I focused on now and started to smile
my soul felt inspired to write again

Just like that the dragonfly flew away
for none of us can sit and rest all day

Sunflowers

I drive past and see that the field is plowed
right now just the dirt adorns the flat ground
in this place the sunflower seeds are sowed
and soon the green stalks will begin to crown

In the blink of an eye a forest grows
a great vibrant sea of yellow and green
folks stop to visit this peaceful meadow
a place both so lively, and yet— serene

I pass once more and the flowers are brown
they’ve withered, yet cling to life desperately
their faces have shriveled and fallen down
and now they sow seeds as their legacy

At first when I looked I saw pain and strife,
but looking much closer, I see new life
