Sunflowers

I drive past and see that the field is plowed
right now just the dirt adorns the flat ground
in this place the sunflower seeds are sowed
and soon the green stalks will begin to crown

In the blink of an eye a forest grows
a great vibrant sea of yellow and green
folks stop to visit this peaceful meadow
a place both so lively, and yet— serene

I pass once more and the flowers are brown
they’ve withered, yet cling to life desperately
their faces have shriveled and fallen down
and now they sow seeds as their legacy

At first when I looked I saw pain and strife,
but looking much closer, I see new life
